What is a UCPD?

UCPD stands for University Certificate of Professional development. Conceived in 2006, they are Higher Education's response to the demand from working professionals for shorter, more flexible ways of accessing University courses and qualifications that offer practical, tactical and strategic skills that make a difference.

UCPDs represent probably the quickest, most flexible method of studying and accessing university courses while still working full time, and in the case of the UCPD Commercial Application of the Web programme, a course most likely to make an immediate positive impact your business or career.

What's unique about UCPD Commercial Application of the Web?

We believe this programme to be unique in the UK. It's positioning, content and objectives represent something different. The genesis of the idea was to create a professional training experience with university pedigree, yet that was more practical, tactical and applicable than anything else available in the UK.

When we reviewed the market, obvious limitations emerged with most courses available in the private or commercial training sector. These were the experience being too vendor and tool obsessed, not really addressing real-world application issues, a lack of post-course implementation help, and insufficient academic rigor or recognition.

In contrast the University sector, had kudos, but courses were too long and inflexible, fees were expensive, and typically demanded full time attendance. Add to this a highly conceptual approach and a general lack up to date field experience from some tutors and a picture of the experience perhaps not being fully fit for purpose for busy professionals emerged.

To summarise this more simply; the worlds of commercial IT training and university academia, needed to move closer to the requirements and realities of business application and being a busy professional. The UCPD Commercial Application of the web was born.

Individual course module or full UCPD qualification?

When considering studying on the UCPD Commercial Application of the Web programme, you have two basic approaches. You can either target an individual course module to meet your skill requirement (eg Search Engine Optimisation), or you can target a group of course modules that together form sufficient professional development credits for a full UCPD qualification.

Simply put, there are currently 18 course modules currently available, each a viable stand-alone course giving you specific skills, and each with credits attached and part of a wider more holistic programme when it comes to commercialising the Web. If you collect 60 or more credits you are awarded a full UCPD University Certificate of Professional Development.

This is a respected and innovative Higher Education qualification, excellent for your CV and valid for CPD Continuing Professional Development portfolios.
