As a lighting designer, sound and stage technician I have experienced the technological revolution as it has evolved and changed around me over the last 15 years. The practical application of IT is what interests me in the new wave Online Social Networking trend and the 'mix and match' "Mash Up" Web 2.0 culture emerging and expanding today. The building of communities across distances and the implications that has on us as physical beings in an increasingly cyber world fascinates me. How this effects the generations and how we communicate and relate to the younger generation is before us.
It's not necessary to be able to build a website or write software but a fundamental understanding of internet basics is, I believe essential in this modern world for business or pleasure.
As a creative production environment virtual worlds and the internet are not so far removed from Theatre as you might think. I love that. I guess I'm a true super user of technology. As a "Super User" of the web I understand Industry plants the seeds, Developers germinate the seeds giving birth to applications and digital platforms, it's the users that have the power to breath life in to them and grant them longevity. It's a beautiful symbiosis.
Working in an ever changing technological environment and embracing these work place advances has fuelled my love of IT. From Lighting equipment to programming lighting desks, advances in audio recording and playback media to the PC itself I have always operated on a need to know basis. And I always need to know more. The application and use of these technologies integrated in to performance is another passion of mine creating AV presentations and continuing to work with creative artists and pioneering business.
In December 2006 I discovered Second Life. In July 2007 Pilot Theatre and my company, PCM creative began an ongoing collaboration to establish a theatre hub in Second Life as an additional promotion and presentation channel and future revenue stream. I am the Virtual Stage Manager for Pilot Theatre Company managing and developing their Second Life presence.
