Caron Lyon
Social Media Specialist
As a lighting designer, sound and stage technician I have experienced the technological revolution as it has evolved and changed around me over the last 15 years. The practical application of IT is what interests me in the new wave Online Social Networking trend and the 'mix and match' "Mash Up" Web 2.0 culture emerging and expanding today. The building of communities across distances and the implications that has on us as physical beings in an increasingly cyber world fascinates me. How this effects the generations and how we communicate and relate to the younger generation is before us.
A glimpse in to Second Life - a guided tour.

Back from the Shift Happens event hosted at York Theatre Royal by Pilot Theatre, the company I develop and maintain a Second Life presence for, I now have the task of reflection and blogging. Before I post my first blog post telling you about the inspirational speakers I listened to during the weekend and link to some brilliant new Social Media applications for you to try out here is the YouTube video of the Walkthrough of the Second Life venue.
Enjoy.
Great content for my website you will agree!
Shift Happens - convergong technology conference - Free over the Internet this Thursday
Posted on 30 Jun 2008 at 6:14pm
On Thursday 3 July from 12 noon Pilot Theatre's Shift Happens conference takes place in York. Its being shown live over the Internet. You don't even have to leave the office to take part or tune in. Watch it from home even. And it's free!
Yes I'm repeating my earlier post but...In a nutshell it's the Theatre Industry meets Web 2, Social Media and social networking...grills it, dissects it and watches it run from the building screaming as creative minds take it a part. There is an impressive speakers list. It asks the question "What can all this technology do for us?" With speakers talking about how their companies are using it to great effect.
Julie Borchard Young will give an overview of The Met: Live in HD Programme and other digital cinema programs.
Kit Monkman, who's mission is to apply leading digital innovation to large-scale live environments in order to expand the audience's experience of theatrical work.
Dave Moutrey who has been Director of Cornerhouse since April 1998. Cornerhouse is Greater Manchester's international centre for cinema and contemporary visual art where audiences, artists and filmmakers are brought together to experience and debate cultural practice and ideas through a unique programme that aims to stimulate, entertain and inform.
Tom Fleming is director of Tom Fleming Creative Consultancy. Tom is a consultant and academic specialising in research, strategy and policy for the cultural and creative economy at all levels. His focus lies on establishing the climate for creativity, innovation, collaboration, and business growth. And many more.
Bill Thompson a New media pioneer, journalist, commentator and technology critic.
And others.
I can't wait. Take a look for yourself.

MediaCamp and beyond
Posted on 27 May 2008 at 12:39am
Dudley very kindly announced my video camera adventure on the AxisCommunity forum board. So I thought I'd let you know how it all went. I have made a start at blogging my thoroughly enjoyable weekend at MediaCampBucks. Not tackled editing the footage yet. I haven't used a video camera before so this was all new to me. I wanted to get people who use and work with social media on camera telling me why it matters and what the future holds. I have audio recordings too on various bits of kit I took with me to put them through their paces. I tested the recording quality on my mini MP3 player and on my mobile phone's voice recorder. Here is business blog's entry Part One. Just a taster of what I got up to.
When the real world and online networking merge.
Posted on 12 May 2008 at 2:07pm

This Friday I am traveling down to High Wycombe to my second MediaCampBucks. Yes the event itself is on the Saturday but MediaCampBucks is more than a 9-5 event.
Chris Hambly, MediaCampBucks linchpin and SMM (Social Media Mafia) Don will be entertaining and holding court at a local drinking establishment in the town on the Friday evening from 6pm. Saturday from 9-5 the event itself will take place. Following a day of technological insights and networking we will be treated to a music showcase and a social evening of entertainment.
This has all been taking shape through a collaborative wiki http://www.mediacampbucks.com where you can register to attend the event. Which is FREE... did I mention that! And the days sessional events are added to a schedule by willing participants who want share their knowledge.
I\'m running a 1hr welcome to Second Life workshop at 1pm. This is made possible by the open wi-fi access meaning any one attending with a laptop or mobile devise can get first rate Internet access.
Collected MediaCampBucks recourses : http://www.pcmcreative.co.uk/redesign/events.html
So tell your friends, Twitter this note, Blog the MediaCamp URL, if you can\'t get to the Real event keep an eye on the wiki for the Virtual Worlds venues. Pilot Theatre in SL at 1pm to say hi to the MediaCampers.

Getting the most from Social Media - Part 1
Posted on 29 Apr 2008 at 12:22pm
Jonny has really got me thinking about the content of my web sites.
Social Media is a vast jungle and I have signed up to many, wandered around, and found I only use the ones where the community of users are strongest, predominantly UK based and willing to share the stuff I am interested in. The UK thing is important to me coz as powerful as the web is, if I am to do business or collaborate on a project I like to see the whites of their eyes at some point during a planning phase and at completion! At the moment I am far too revenue stricken to fly the world! There is the video conferencing option or even the Second Life meet up but I have 5 senses and I like to use them in my decision making. The real world is the best world.
But back to Social Media, The thing for me about these sites is the opportunity to grab little snippets of code that the sites generate for you to incorporate content from social media platforms directly into your own website. For example, YouTube have a great free storage facility for material and a membership subscription facility. There is a lot of traffic going to YouTube but anyone looking at your YouTube offering want to be coming to your website. Compiling a custom media player and embedding it in your website makes that YouTube content available to view on your own business presence. Here is an example
The reason for this post...
Before you end up with so many social networks and social media accounts it is good to have somewhere to keep track of them. For this I use "Flock - The Social Web Browser". My recent Business blog entry is the beginning of a series of entries about the Social Media and Social Networking sites that have captured my attention.
If you trial Flock please post a comment on the blog, try out the RSS, click around and let me know how you get on.
Second Life coming soon

Second Life workshops are on the virtual horizon. I guess I'll be visiting this forum a lot over the next few months and blogging. I'm Caron (CJ) and I will be your tour guide and survival specialist as you explore and discover the world of Second Life. How to use it creatively to add value to your business is the aim of the game. To get an idea of how I use Second Life in colaboration with Pilot Theatre Company this is an article I wrote for a Second Life news reporter Nazz Lane who writes a blog called Lane List . He also freelances for a Second Life news papper called The Second Life Newspaper. He has spend time with me in world recently interviewing me about my business involvement in Second Life and how it benifits Pilot Theatre's business profile.
